The 11 Best Bed Frames of 2023: Where to Shop

What to look for in a bed frame

The best bed frame for you depends on your style, mattress type, and amount of space. A low platform bed, durable metal frame, or grand canopy bed might all suit your needs and preferences.

Rasheeda Gray of Gray Space Interiors suggests thinking about how you want your bed to be featured in your space. “Will it be tall, short, have a huge presence?” After you’ve settled on a profile, Gray says, “then you can dig into material.” Here are some things to consider when shopping for a bed frame:

Material: Both metal and solid wood bed frames are durable and strong. Metal will be easier to move around and less expensive than a solid wood frame.

Support (slats vs. box spring): Most modern bed frames don’t need a box spring, but there are exceptions. Platform beds and beds with support slats spanning the entire length of the frame do not require a box spring. Adding a box spring to these types of beds will only serve to make the bed higher; it likely won’t increase the durability or support and can even add a significant amount of weight onto your frame. That said, you should always check the manufacturer’s requirements for both your bed frame and your mattress. Some mattresses — particularly very heavy ones — require the use of a box spring or else you risk voiding your warranty. Basic, traditional, and older bed frames without support slats will require a box spring.

Height: While there are no hard and fast rules about a bed frame’s dimensions, “there’s a perfect height for beds, and that’s about the same height as a comfortable chair,” said Jones. In other words, “about 16 to 18 inches from the ground to the top of the mattress.” Opt for a lower frame if you have difficulty getting in and out of bed.

Headboard: Gray prefers the look of a headboard, but there are exceptions. “The only two times I would not do a headboard are if the room is really small; it makes the space feel bigger if you don’t have the visual impact of the headboard,” she said. “Secondly, if you have some sort of accent wall or mural behind the bed.”

Footboard: A footboard offers a more traditional look, but it’s not necessary. “If you have a larger room and you’re going to have a set of chairs or maybe even a bench sitting at the foot of the bed, the footboard does a really nice job of separating the bed from that bench so you can have two separate zones,” Burke said.

Price: Bed frames can cost between $100 to over $6,000. Prices vary depending on size, brand, material, and style. Higher-priced bed frames will be made of more durable materials and will hold up better if you move a lot.
