The latest indictment of former president Donald Trump accuses him of making many false claims of purported voter fraud in his attempts to overturn his 2020 election loss. A grand jury indicted him on four counts, including conspiracy to defraud the nation. Describing the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol as an “unprecedented assault on the seat of American democracy,” special counsel Jack Smith said the attack was “fueled by lies” from Trump, whose team rejected the allegations, instead describing the indictment of the 2024 GOP presidential front-runner as “election interference.”
