Chris Christie,<\/a> the most vocal opponent against former President Donald Trump in the 2024 Republican presidential field, said he was not backing down from being Trump\u2019s chief detractor and warned his fellow candidates from ignoring him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">At a town hall in Salem, New Hampshire, an attendee asked Christie if he would ever \u201cgo high\u201d when Trump attacks him and goes \u201clow.\u201d Christie gave a succinct response.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cNo,\u201d Christie said to cheers from the crowd.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cLet me tell you why. Because we tried that with him in 2016, all of us ignored his insults,\u201d Christie continued. \u201cWe said, \u2018We\u2019re not gonna respond to that, we\u2019re gonna go high and talk about other things and just let him do what he\u2019s gonna do.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<aside aria-label=\"advertisement\" class=\"gnt_m gnt_x gnt_x__lbl gnt_x__al\"\/>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Ignoring Trump in 2016, Christie said, ultimately led to his presidency. For a candidate to win, Christie claimed, they \u201chave to fight him on the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cWhen he lies, we need to fight him. Because to ignore him is to assent to his lies,\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2023\/06\/12\/chris-christie-age-bridgegate-trump-attack\/70313231007\/\" data-t-l=\":b|e|k|${u}\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">Christie added.<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">In the 2016 GOP presidential primary, Christie emerged as one of Trump\u2019s earliest supporters and later one of his closest allies during his presidency up until his efforts to overturn the 2020 election. Since then, Christie said he was \u201cwrong\u201d to support the former president.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside aria-label=\"advertisement\" class=\"gnt_m gnt_x gnt_x__lbl gnt_x__al\"\/>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Christie\u2019s prior support of Trump has not been forgotten by some Granite State voters.
